Resources & Insight
In this section, we provide additional information on the topic of educational travel for children, youth, and young adults. This content, combined with student stories, gives us all more insight, knowledge, and understanding of the impact of educational travel and how we can continue to make it more accessible to more students.
Of note, travel experiences at an early age and into young adulthood play a significant developmental role. Research suggests that this experience can be profound and can greatly aid in one’s openness to intercultural sensitivities and one’s ability to be a more thoughtful global citizen and leader. DCIS students are proof of this.

My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem:
“When people ask me why I still have hope and energy after all these years, I always say: Because I travel. For more than four decades, I’ve spent at least half my time on the road…. Taking to the road—by which I mean letting the road take you—changed who I thought I was. The road is messy in the way that real life is messy. It leads us out of denial and into reality, out of theory and into practice, out of caution and into action, out of statistics and into stories—in short, out of our heads and into our hearts…” (xix).
As Robin Morgan wrote so wisely, ‘Hate generalizes, love specifies.’ That’s what makes going on the road so important. It definitely specifies” (xxi). Contributed by Cara Goman (DCISF Past Board President)
